In recent times, fuel prices continue increase, affecting various businesses with the transport sector being the hardest hit. This is threatening the survival of the transport business with many operators finding it difficult to keep up with the rising cost.
Despite this, the Ghana Public Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) in a joint statement directed transport operators to hold on with any increase in lorry fares. The development also led the Ministry of Roads and Highways to direct the Ghana Police Service to crackdown on transport operators who may increase their fares. That notwithstanding, reports indicate that some drivers are still charging higher fares to be able to sustain their operations.
The case is not different in Wa as operators of tricycles, popularly known as “Camboo” are concerned about the high cost of fuel in recent times which they say is affecting their business.
In an interview with Mak News, they indicated the hike in the prices of fuel products is affecting their daily sales, thus, impeding their ability to take care of basic necessities like paying the school fees of their children.
The operators also noted that any attempt to increase the transport is always met with resistance from the commuters. “The passengers always refuse to pay any new fares given to them. And if we insist on them to pay the increased fares, they often resort to walking instead”, a camboo operator disclosed. The camboo drivers are therefore forced to maintain old prices despite the increasing fuel prices.
The camboo operators appealed to the government to do something about the fuel prices in order to help them sustain their businesses.
