The Paramount Chief of the Wechiau Traditional Area in the Wa West District, Naa Imoru Nandong Gomah II, has described the Wa West as an “orphan” given the underdevelopment since its creation in 2004.

Naa Gomah stated this at a Community Engagement in Wechiau organised by the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer as part of his three-day campaign tour of the Upper West region.

The Paramount Chief said the district is faced by many challenges, including bad roads, youth unemployment, and insufficient health and education infrastructure. He mentioned the abandoned Community Day Senior High School at Dorimon as one that would have helped the educational needs of the district had it been completed.

Naa Gomah II appealed to former president Mahama, who is seeking reelection this year, to give maximum attention to the Wa West District should he get the nod in the December election. He noted that splitting the district into two constituencies could aid the development of the area.

In his address at the event, the NDC Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama assured the chiefs and people of Wa West of his resolve to change the narrative of the district should he be given the nod to lead Ghana again.

He underscored the lack of development across the country under the Akufo-Addo administration, noting that 80 percent of Ghanaians have indicated that the country is moving in a wrong direction.

Unlike NPP governments, the former president said NDC governments are noted for bringing development to every part of the country. He cited “the biggest library in Wa”, connection of over 400 communities to the national grid, and improvement in the road network as some of his government’s achievements in the Upper West region.

John Mahama, thus, urged the Wa West electorates to trust him with their votes to become president again as he had a good track record of leading Ghana to prosperity.

He took a swipe at the NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his biggest contender, stating that he has no track record in leadership that warrants a vote for him.

On his part, the Member of Parliament for the Wa West Constituency, Supt. (rtd) Peter Lanchene Toobu said John Mahama is a man who can reset and transform the country.

The MP re-echoed the NDC’s promise of creating a Women Development Bank to support women in the country. He underscored the importance of women-led businesses to national development, the reason the next NDC government wants to establish the bank.

The Wa West legislator also said a future NDC government will ensure prompt supplies to all health facilities in the district that lack consumables (both drug and non-drug). He further indicated that the next Mahama administration will continue the Rural Electrification and complete all abandoned projects in the district.

Peter Lanchene concluded by rallying the support of his constituents for John Mahama in the December 7 presidential election, noting that he is the only person who can get Ghana out of the current economic conundrum.
