The 2024 Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has rendered an apology for comparing the performance of President Akufo-Addo to that of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

According to the former Energy Minister, his comment was an expression of his personal opinion about the contributions of the various presidents, and not a sign of disrespect to any of them.

It will be recalled that during the outdooring of Napo as Running Mate to the NPP 2024 Presidential Candidate in Kumasi, he asserted that President Akufo-Addo has performed better than all past presidents, with particular mention of Kwame Nkrumah.

This position was however met with backlash from Ghanaians with many describing it as disrespectful to the first president. Others claim that, the comments were just another sign of the alleged arrogance of Mathew Opoku Prempeh.

However, in a statement issued Friday, July 12, Dr. Opoku Prempeh said he was sorry for the comment and asked for forgiveness from all who may have felt hurt.

“The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other Presidents we have had. I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor,” parts of the statement read.

He added that, “I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologise sincerely and regret any discomfort caused.”
