The People’s National Convention (PNC) has distanced itself from a reported declaration of support by its Sissala East Constituency Executives for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Issahaku Amidu Chinnia.
In a press release issued by the party’s General Secretary, Issahaque Awudulai, the PNC described the purported endorsement as “illegal, baseless, null, and void.”
According to the statement, the leadership of the PNC had not authorized any decision to back the NPP or its candidate.
The release stressed that the declaration, made on October 19, 2024, contradicts the party’s internal processes and principles, calling it an act of “indiscipline, dishonesty, and disloyalty.”
The PNC emphasized that , the authority to endorse another party or candidate rests solely with the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). It cited the party’s conduct in the 2008 elections, where the NEC deliberated before supporting a candidate in a second-round runoff, as an example of the proper procedure.
The party’s statement comes amid an ongoing legal dispute between the PNC and the Electoral Commission (EC) over the disqualification of its presidential candidate from the 2024 elections.
Awudulai highlighted that the leadership remains focused on this legal battle, expressing hope for a favorable outcome that would allow the PNC to contest the December 7, 2024 presidential elections.
The statement further noted that disciplinary action would be taken against those responsible for the unauthorized endorsement, including the Constituency Chairman and Secretary. They will be referred to the party’s Disciplinary Committee to answer for their misconduct, it added.
The PNC urged its members, supporters, and sympathizers in the Sissala East Constituency to disregard the purported endorsement and remain committed to the party’s campaign efforts as the December elections approach.
The release concluded with a call for unity and discipline, reaffirming the party’s commitment to participate in the upcoming elections.
About 355 members of the PNC in the Sissala East Constituency, led by the constituency chairman, declared their support for the Member of Parliament and NPP Parliamentary Candidate. They said the decision was as a result of the good works the MP has done in the last four years, citing the new AstroTurf pitch, boreholes and strengthening of the health sector.
The PNC members indicated that, more can be achieved with Amidu Chinnia as MP, the reason they want to help him retain the Sissala East seat, since their party has not fielded a candidate.
